It was noted that the objectives were wider than being limited to the Mellish Road Church, and are as follows: · To seek to improve the environment and to provide a focus for community activities in the Butts/Mellish Road area The constitution was accepted by all present. 4. Minutes of last meeting No minutes were available as this AGM is the first. 5. Treasurer’s Report Copies of the Treasurer’s Report were circulated, this was as follows:
It was observed that the Hatherton Community Group now had a Bank Account with the HSBC. Cheques could be released from the account with 2 out of the 3 signatures of the chairman, secretary and treasurer. A system had also been introduced whereby expenses claims forms were used which also required to signatures. A petty cash float was held and its current status was as stated in the report. 6. Chairman’s Annual Report It was noted that the £1,950 paid into the account on the 18th of August 2005 was the result of a Community Empowerment Network Community Chest award to the group. In the normal course of events this would have needed to be repaid within 12 months, however the Walsall Community Empowerment Network had ceased to exist and there was now no longer a need to repay the money so long as it was spent diligently. It was observed that the group had been set up in the main to receive funding such as that for the purposes of administrating the achievement of the objectives and to put pressure on the local authority. As a result the Council had served a repairs notice on the owner and at the time of the meeting work had been undertaken. The Council had at cabinet level resolved to pursue compulsory purchase powers. Currently, the Hatherton Community Group had full political support from all parties and the Mayor was especially supportive, having promised to make it her project for her term of office. The Group had also made contact with the West Midlands Heritage Trust and were meeting with them on the 8th of July. The Trust were considering making an application for a feasibility study. It was felt that this would be a good alliance as the Trust would relieve the Group of the difficulty of running the site in the event that it came into the Group’s hands. The Group had also been awarded the opportunity of making a film for the BBC’s Community Channel under the Activ8 label. The Group were required to be filmed 12 times a year for 10 minutes, and this material would be placed both on the Community Channel and the BBC’s website. It was also described how it had been proposed that a sculpture by Andrew Stonyer had been proposed for the roundabout by the church. The group had succeeding in resisting this on the grounds that while a nearby listed building was in such a poor state it was counterproductive to add public furniture. This was successful, in the meantime a similar sculpture can be seen on the Citroen garage roundabout. David Mahony would try to find out if the money (~£50,000) was still in existence. 7. Election of the following officials It was noted that none of the above posts was up for re election and that all parties wished to remain in their positions. One of the posts would be elected in the next year. The Chairman invited anyone present to come forward to help with the community work, committee or film or the film and reiterated that anyone wishing to volunteer would be welcome. 8. Vote of thanks to Members The Chairman thanked everyone once again for coming and congratulated the Group on a successful year, reiterating that they had every intention of continuing with what would be a long-term project. 9. Any other business None. Close of AGM
