Meanwhile, Sharon Mitchell, Secretary of the Hatherton Community Group made the following statement:

‘Much to the dismay of the residents group and the efforts of the council officials and councillors, the church was left in such a poor insecure state that it was yet again fire attacked. The damage is quite severe and at this stage it is difficult to assess whether it is reversible.  The section of the building which was targeted was the most vulnerable with that area having the existing crack and needing the most support with the spire on that wall.  The residence group has stressed each time it met that from a health and safety aspect alone it had been grossly neglected but aesthetically no regard had ever been given to the surrounding community. One is also conscious of the morality of leaving such a beautiful building, one of so few left in the Walsall area, to decay to this extent.’
